After further thought I decided to try using a reinforced UPVC door panel, which I cut down to fit. Like most people I needed to fit a new outward opening hatch - I tried making one using some 15mm plywood offcuts battened across for rigidity, but afterwards I feared it was too heavy for the puny cranked hinges and touch-latch I wanted to use. I wasn't until my wife's accident that I discovered this type of ladder existed. And my wife's ankle is now back to normal, thank goodness.

I have the Youngmans version of this ladder, which looks virtually identical except for the mounting bracket/hinge design. I just had a small problem, but it's not serious, I don't recommend it for houses with a height of 2.

40, it's very vertical! I had to return the product because: 1) It was too tall 2) I didn't notice that it had no lid! These are readily available.

I bought it after my wife fell off a step ladder climbing into the loft and broke her ankle. I'm a very big guy and this unit has no problem supporting me and I feel perfectly safe standing on it. I added a 2" thick batten to the opening edge to give sufficient depth for the mounting brackets. I only put in half the screws while checking the fit and it was perfect so I put the rest of the screws in and added the springs.
It really is an excellent product, material, creation, etc. I suppose to make sure it fits flat on the floor but I found this impractical. Fitting was fairly straightforward despite the loft opening being hampered by a joist-end which I trimmed down slightly for a few inches along its length. Then from below I extended the ladder so it still support itself while moving the ladder back of the temporary support blocks.
The ladder itself is excellent - works smoothly, is very sturdy and is easy to use. I think that for the weight and volume of the ladder, it should be better packaged (the fixing part came from the outside and with minor scratches! - The package arrived almost undone!
