The police team headed by DCI John Marvel was quirky yet worked well. His methods and skill is a wonderful story in itself for his ingenuity and resourcefulness but it is also a damming account of children in need and left to their own devices. ”The three abandoned children in the novel tugged at my heartstrings. Into the mix we have a returning character, John Marvel who is a delight and a comedy classic.

To have faith in his Father, but who later abandons him and his two sisters, further torments Jack. “For the first time, Jack felt sorry for her. Slovenly Marvel working with the fastidious Reynolds was a treat to read about. That Jack is such a troubled young man is quite frightening but that the author creates in him a figure who demands our goodwill and gets us wanting him to thrive is astonishing as he is a thief and vandal.

It does try to say there will be those who get swept away and those who barely survive but in Jack we might find an antihero who finally gets justice for his Mum and peace of mind. “Dreams died, but the nightmare of reality went on.

The outstanding writing brought the multi-layered plot together seamlessly. This book is so rich and wholesome you will feel you’ve sampled the finest food in the richest banquet. This wonderful thriller, which begins and ends on the hard shoulder of the M5 motorway was a delight to read. Bauer is at her best writing about children, and the main protagonist, Jack Bright, is a young man with exceptional gifts and a sharp brain.

Twice. At the tender age of fourteen, Jack valiantly tries to keep the house going, the bills paid etc. You have to suspend your disbelief early on - if you found a knife by your bedside in the morning, surely you'd call the police? DC Elizabeth Rice was the perfect foil for Reynolds.
