As you are interested in LOTR, I guess at some point you'll consider purchasing "Hobbit" as well. Great films underrated but definitely need to be watched a few times to see all the subtleties. Animator Ralph Bakshi attempted an animated feature of the novel which he released in 1978 to lukewarm response. I love my nephew but he's no Monet.

Elijah Wood as the protagonist Frodo Baggins as well as his faithful friend Samwise Gamgee portrayed by Sean Astin are the very heart of the trilogy, as their friendship and struggles through danger and certain death are the very emotional heart and soul which carry the trilogy. Already seen the Hobbit at the cinema and i would love to watch more of the story. The Extended Edition is worth every single penny and is the definitive way to watch the movies. The Lord of the Rings film trilogy still stands as one of the greatest works of art in cinema history.

And it only gets better from there, The Two Towers and Return of the King are equally far superior to their theatrical brothers, there's this scene involving Gandalf and Saruman and, well, I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but why the scene was cut from the theatrical I just don't know! The basic facts-LOTR series has basically two types of movies- a) Theatrical and b) Extended, each edition are available in both-DVD and Blu ray format.

I could never, ever go back to watching the theatrical editions of the films now, they just don't compare, and to be honest, it would be unfair to compare them. Each theme feels different and unique for each, character, realm and scene. I have not noticed any 'darker' colors as mentioned by some other viewers. The computer effects especially still look amazing even to this day.
